When I reflect on my time as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, sitting in an abandoned elementary school classroom in Baghdad that had been partially destroyed by a rocket attack, I never could have imagined that those experiences would one day lead me to a career serving at the highest levels of government, all without leaving the city I love.
I began the program with only a limited understanding of what congressional district offices do for the people they serve, but I knew it was an opportunity of a lifetime.
I started my work in the office handling military and veterans’ issues. I assisted veterans in locating long-lost military records, and I worked with active-duty servicemembers and their families as they navigated pathways to U.S. citizenship. From my very first day, I found this work deeply rewarding.
As my role in the office expanded, I was entrusted with managing the entire Service Academy nomination process. I coordinated the application process, developed the interview process, and advised the Member on which students should receive nominations. Our Academy nomination program has helped change the lives of more than 20 constituents by opening the door to a world-class education and a lifetime of service.
In recent months, I have also been entrusted with a broader portfolio. In addition to my previous responsibilities, I now serve as the field representative for three amazing cities, representing a constituency of approximately 400,000 residents. During the past two years, I have had the honor of helping celebrate the opening of remarkable new small businesses in my hometown, coordinating congressional visits with local, state, and federal agencies, and planning community town halls, one of which was attended by a former Vice President of the United States.
The past two years working in a member office have been an amazing experience.
“Thank you” hardly seems enough to express what the G&G CAP has done for me. It has provided me with opportunities I never imagined possible, allowed me to serve my community in meaningful ways, and helped shape the next chapter of my career. For that, I will always be grateful.
