As a military spouse, employment can be incredibly difficult to find. With so many moves around the country, and inconsistent access to resources, it is always intimidating trying to find a job in a new place. I always dreamed of working in a congressional office but felt discouraged that I could not live near Washington D.C. due to my spouse’s military career. The Green & Gold Congressional Aide Program has allowed me to work in a district office in close proximity to my spouse’s duty station and opened the doors to so many opportunities for me. I have worked on federal casework, attended district events and stakeholder meetings, and collaborated with my D.C. colleagues to guide policy decisions that affect servicemembers and their families. I have learned how to make connections with important leaders in this field, and network with Aides across the country. Military spouses are incredibly resilient and understand what it takes to adapt to challenging environments. These skills translate incredibly well in a congressional office, where no two days are ever the same. Military spouses also live out much of the policy that is decided in Congress, and each of us has a unique experience and perspective on it. Lending that firsthand testimony to other staffers and Members who may not know about the military lifestyle is invaluable as they shape legislation. The Green & Gold Program has changed my life more than I can express— my love for public service has grown and I know I have a whole team behind me to encourage my future goals and provide the resources I need to achieve them.
