Susan Funk, 2025, Green & Gold Aide, House Veterans’ Affairs Committee

As a Green & Gold Aide on The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, Susan’s role stretches beyond the borders of the United States! The committee has oversight responsibilities for military cemeteries managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (AMBC). The AMBC was established in 1923 by President Harding for the construction of monuments honoring the American Expeditionary Forces. Today, ABMC administers, operates and maintains 26 permanent American burial grounds and 31 separate memorials, monuments and markers, on foreign soil.

Over the July 4 weekend, Susan visited the Cambridge American Cemetery. Dedicated in 1956, the Cambridge American Cemetery sits on 30.5 acres, has 3811 burials, and 5127 veterans honored on their Walls of the Missing. It was an honor to walk the meticulously cared for grounds and learn from the dedicated AMBC employees.

“When you go on a trip overseas, it’s worth an internet search to see if you’re close enough to an AMBC location to make a visit. It is humbling to reflect on the sacrifices of these brave men and women and so heartening to see how much care the AMBC employees have for the legacy of those memorialized.”

“Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.” JOHN J. PERSHING
