The Green & Gold Program changed the trajectory of my career and my life. As an enlisted Army veteran transitioning out of service, I wanted to continue serving the public but initially faced barriers because I had not yet completed my bachelor’s degree.
Green & Gold allowed me to enter congressional service while I was finishing my undergraduate education. Halfway through the program, I completed my bachelor’s degree and transitioned into a permanent role. The experience affirmed that even us enlisted veterans that may not have a formal education can bring immediate value to legislative offices.
I am now pursuing a Master of Public Administration and strongly believe this path would not have been possible without Green & Gold. I encourage legislative offices to give more enlisted veterans, especially those working toward a degree the opportunity to gain experience, learn casework, and be mentored into long-term public service careers.
This a great program for my fellow veterans. As an employee of the U.S House of Representative we can positively impact the lives of our fellow Americans. Our service to our country does not have to end when we fulfill our military service.
The Green & Gold Program offered practical training and a diplomatic lens for serving constituents and engaging in the democratic process. It gave me the tools to support people effectively and respectfully, deepened my understanding of how the legislative and executive branches function, and prepared me to navigate federal red tape on behalf of those who need help most.
The military lifestyle had its own challenges to overcome, which is why after I’d finished my service and moved back home I spent a long time unsure of what this life had in store for me next but luckily, I came across the listing for this position and it has not only given me invaluable experience of how our government functions but also giving me the ability to work with one of the greatest Members of Congress in my lifetime.
The support I’ve been shown throughout this process was almost nonexistent during my military service and it was that support that has enabled me to thrive in this position. I do hope I can continue my career in public service and again I can’t stress enough how much of an opportunity this was for myself and family.
I can’t stress enough how amazing the team is, organizing this program, keeping it running smoothly and helping veterans take the first step into something greater.
Orientation is a definite must if it’s possible for the person to travel, but the information shared between fellows in the MS chat is just as valuable.
I’m glad I was able to be a part of this program and I’d do it all over again if I could.
The Green & Gold Program is an exceptional initiative that provides veterans, Gold Star families, and active-duty spouses with meaningful opportunities to transition into civilian roles while continuing to serve their communities. I particularly valued the unique opportunity to work in both a Democratic office, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez, and a Republican office, Congressman Ken Calvert. This experience allowed me to gain a well-rounded perspective on bipartisan collaboration and develop skills that are applicable across diverse political and professional environments. Thank you for creating such a valuable pathway for those who have served our country.
The job was different than what I originally thought, but that’s not a bad thing. I am thrilled that I had the full support of my Office Director to ask the right questions and do outreach activities on behalf of my Member. I was able to learn many new things that I will be utilizing for my next job and I am grateful. The program was the right fit to help continue my growth in this field.
